TAT is excited to share numerous online initiatives and campaigns that each help to emphasize different tourism sectors of our beloved Thailand. Finally, we will highlight the recent Thai Food Festival that was launched in conjunction with CNNGo's inclusion of Bangkok as one of the world's best cities for street food.

We hope that you'll continue to share your passion and support for Thailand, and we look forward to providing more news for you throughout the year. As always, we hope to see you all, in person, in Thailand very soon!

JUNE'S FEATURED HOT SPOT...PHANG NGA!

Beach

Located on the Andaman coast immediately north of Phuket, Phang Nga is home to hundreds of islands, a spectacular bay and vast amounts of beautiful land.

The national parks are a traveler's gem, each offering diverse and unique features. Phang Nga Bay National Park is a geological wonder filled with islets, sunken caverns and startling rock formations rising vertically out of the sea.  It's bay is extremely sheltered, making it ideal to explore by sea kayak.

Phang Nga's Andaman coast offers equally stunning national parks of a different kind. The island groups of Surin and Similan are renowned for their beauty, often considered the two most beautiful islands in Thailand for their spectacular underwater scenery that attracts divers from around the world.

On the Phang Nga mainland, Khao Lak features a coastal park full of rare birds, exotic mammals and scenic waterfalls. Devastated by the tsunami in 2004, the coast has since been completely rebuilt featuring a variety of luxury and budget hotels.

Phang Nga Bay, which contains the hundreds of islands of Phang Nga, includes the famous Koh Tapu, commonly referred to as James Bond Island. It was here that the cinematic classic "The Man with the Golden Gun" was filmed. The area also includes Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, which feature laid-back communities that serve as an ideal setting for cultural homestay experiences.

BANGKOK NAMED THE WORLD'S TOP TOURIST DESTINATION

The third annual Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard puts Bangkok into the number one spot as the world's top tourist destination. With 15.98 million visitors projected for the capital city this year, 2013 marks the first time any Asian city has been projected to be the top-ranked tourist destination, surpassing London, Paris and New York City.

The study found that Bangkok is experiencing a large increase in its number of tourists in 2013, up 9.8 percent from 2009. That compares to New York's increase at 5 percent and London's at 3.8 percent. Paris, meanwhile, saw a small dip in its number of tourists (negative 0.7 percent).

The results are based on data MasterCard collected from governments, central banks, related public agencies and airlines so far this year, while providing projections for the remainder of 2013.

TAT LAUNCHES THREE ONLINE TOURISM CAMPAIGNS

The Tourism Authority of Thailand is implementing several online campaigns to directly tap premium segments of the tourism industry in 2013. In the past month, TAT launched the Thailand Super Quality portal, created to draw attention from the online community to luxury and premium tourism in the destination with the goal of boosting tourism spending throughout the country.

TAT also launched Find Your Amazing, an online destination where travelers can share previous Thailand experiences and provide inspiration for others to discover the country. The user-generated site contains a virtual wall of images, videos and text, with each entry showcasing a memorable experience unique to the destination. By utilizing the hashtag #FindYourAmazing, users can seamlessly upload to the site via their Twitter accounts. Individuals who do not wish to link social media accounts still have the ability to contribute their favorite Thailand memories and learn about the experiences of others by registering a separate Find Your Amazing profile via email atfindyouramazing.com/register.

The third online campaign, Thailand for Two, engages brides on the numerous experiences that make Thailand the premier honeymoon and romance destination for couples. The initiative is being unveiled as part of a strategic partnership with XO Group Inc., a global media and technology leader with the top-ranked wedding website, www.TheKnot.com.

TAT'S "FRIENDS OF THAILAND" HONORED AT TTM+ 2013

The Tourism Authority of Thailand awarded 38 individuals, institutions, companies and organizations which have provided support to the Thai travel and tourism industry over the years with the "Friends of Thailand Awards 2013" at Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2013. Initiated by TAT in 1996, the Friends of Thailand Awards are conferred every two years to recognize and reward the efforts of the award-winners to maintain a positive image of Thailand and ensure a steady flow of visitor arrivals.

The importance of this year's awards is due to the record-breaking arrivals to Thailand, a clear result of the successful contributions of the "Friends of Thailand."

The Friends of Thailand Awards was first held in December 1996 at the Oriental Hotel Bangkok where 66 recipients from 18 countries were honored. This year marked the first time the ceremony has taken place at TTM+.

The winners are nominated by 25 TAT overseas offices and finalized by a judging committee. The list of the Friends of Thailand Award winners 2013 are broken into four categories:

1. Category of International Individuals; Total 7 awards from 7 countries

2. Category of International Organizations; Total 3 awards from 3 countries

3. Category of International Tour Operators; Total 14 awards from 9 countries

4. Category of International Media; Total 12 awards from 12 countries

THAILAND TRAVEL MART PLUS 2013 INTRODUCES TWO NEW EVENTS

The Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2013 (TTM+2013), held from June 5-7, 2013, broke new ground with two first-time events: the participation of Yunnan Provincial Tourism Administration and the introduction of debates to the Travel Forum.

Both were created to help expand the quality of participation in Thailand's largest business-to-business event and also to raise the level of intellectual discussion.

The Yunnan Provincial Tourism Administration introduced a team of registered delegates to participate in TTM+ to showcase the exciting tourism products of the entire Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which includes Yunnan province of China, Myanmar, Laos PDR, Vietnam, and Cambodia, an important gateway to Southeast and South Asia.

The debate aspect was introduced to the convention through both the "Creative Travel" and "DIY Tourism" topics during the travel forum keynote sessions.

The first keynote session, "Changing destination perceptions through creative travel" by Professor Greg Richards, included the debate: "Bangkok needs repositioning through creative tourism techniques and implementation." Following, was Frank Oostdam's session "DIY in tourism: Dynamic Packaging, the pros and the cons" with debate topic: "Dynamic packaging will become the tourist's preferred option of buying holidays."

TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni welcomed all the inaugural events at TTM, saying, "The strong presence of Yunnan province will certainly give a major boost for buyers seeking new destinations in this part of the world. At the same time, the inclusion of debates is now important in order to broaden industry discourse and provide an opportunity for such an important issues to be discussed in a comprehensive manner."
